Well, I haven’t been able to post for a while what with spending, wrapping, and transporting presents for 3 children and many siblings, travelling, cooking and drinking the occasional glass of sherry. I tried not to overspend this year (writers don’t get paid much), but inevitably failed.
If, like me, you have spent a Christmas with children ranging from 2 to 16 (cousins included), you will probably have seen your fair share of video games and animation. One of my nephews received a PS2 (now a big cheaper due to bigger video game fish), another received a PS2. My husband didn’t get an Xbox, 360, however, as I only bought him an Xbox last year - very frustrating.
What is more than obvious to anyone with eyes now is the complete domination of the video game industry. While record and DVD sales go up and down due to downloading and piracy, video games are a sellers’ market. If my own experience of Christmas is anything to go by, many homes now have one games console per child, with the age-appropriate games to go with them.
If you are interested in game animation and design, the good news is that it is now becoming a buyer’s market in terms of choosing the right online or traditional degree in games animation and design. Anyone who retains the mistaken illusion that games animation and design degrees are not proper degrees will be laughed out of the marketplace.
More than 100 US universities now offer degrees in game animation and design. One benefit of a degree related to such a relatively new and growing area is the up to date teaching and learning methods. Games animation is changing every day. so game animation and design students are unlikely to suffer from out of date teaching materials and staff.
In short, there has never been a better time to get into game animation and design. A few years from now, your game animation degree could be the best present you’ll get.
