In the US and the UK, public health is never out of the news at the moment. What with the panic about bird flu, the ongoing problems in Louisiana, and now the launch of the new medicare drug benefits, public health professionals are in demand. The need for public health provision is something we all have in common, even if Brits like myself sometimes find the US health system difficult to understand.
Unfortunately, having read an article in the New York Times about the new Medicare drug benefits, it sounds like senior citizens in the US have been having problems getting their heads round the new system themselves.
As I have been researching this area, I have found myself asking, what do public health professionals do? What does a masters in public health mean? The area of public health is so massive - and with such wide-ranging implications, where do you start?
Needless to say I am going to start finding out. Watch this space.
