Online Distance Learning ForumWednesday, January 04, 2006Online Accounting Courses - Who Needs Them? Well me, probably
I may well have told you before that I have had an interesting career - several interesting careers, as a matter of fact. I’ve toiled in marketing, flirted with teaching, fallen into editing and revelled in motherhood and writing. Never, during any of this time, have I ever considered an accounting career.
After another expensive Christmas, and as I approach my third tax bill as a fully self-employed writer, my respect for those with successful accounting careers grows and grows. I am even beginning to think that I should undertake an accounting course myself. While I have always prided myself on living within my income, fitting a part-time writing career in with three children leaves me little time to take proper care of my accounts. Many people view accounting - and accountants, in a derogatory way. True, adding up long lines of figures is not for everyone, but the truth is that without a constant stream of accounting course graduates, we’d all be in big trouble. What’s more, the onset of better technology and accounting software is not likely to end accounting careers in a hurry. There will always be some decisions that are better made by humans. Accounting courses and careers mean more than traditional accountancy. An accountancy course coupled with an MBA is the ideal tool to rise up the management ladder or start your own business with. An accounting career can also offer a great deal more flexibility than many other vocations. Once qualified, you can choose to work from home, with hours to suit you and your family. That’s one thing I have in common with accountants. But I suspect that that is probably the only thing we have in common!
Comments:
I also admire those who can work with long lists of numbers. I personally would rather work with words, but it's so true that accountants are some of the most important people in the business world.
I know. The problem is, accounting careers aren’t seen as particularly sexy. But then, what career is really what it seems? If you and I are both writers, readers in the virtual world may still see us tinkering away at a type writer, pencil between our teeth, hair in a bun and the theme tune of Murder She Wrote in the background. The reality is very different (well, I’m younger anyway.)

The point is, an accounting course can lead to a whole range of accounting and management careers. More than that, an accounting course is one of a core set of programs which are worth the money. You are very likely to earn enough to pay off your degree debts, and end up with more time, flexibility and money with which to enjoy your free time. That actually sounds pretty sexy to me! << Home Archives
